So here’s what the IOC had to say about Beijing’s preparations for the forthcoming Olympiad:
“The quality of preparation, the readiness of the venues and the attention to operational detail for these Games have set a gold standard for the future.”
Certainly the IOC is aware that Beijing fails to meet the World Health Organization’s minimum standards for air quality and that the widespread dumping of untreated sewage may impede Olympic sailing events. Beijing is a veritable superfund site, not a gold standard. And the IOC knows this. So it’s safe to assume that the IOC is inclined toward deception rather than merely ignorant. Given the organization’s sordid history, that’s hardly surprising.
